Step-by-Step Instructions
- Choose machine embroidery designs for the central square and cornerstones. I decided to make a winter mini quilt so I picked a Snowman as a main motif and four matching designs from the Petite Christmas Collection for cornerstones.
- Embroider, unhoop and press. You may need to trim away or tear away your stabilizer. I decided to leave mine in place.
- Cut the central square (with the main motif) to 7.5” square.
- Cut four cornerstones to 2.5” squares.
- Cut 56 tiny 1.5” squares for pieced borders.
- Sew 1.5” squares into four borders 7×2 squares each. Use 1/4” seam allowance. The best way is to make four-patches and then stitch them together.
- Place two borders on top of the central square and pin in place. Place the cornerstones on top of the other two borders and pin in place.
- Sew a 1/4” seam along the pinned edges.
- Open and press (or fingerpress).
- Press the seams of each row in opposite directions so they nest nicely.
- Nest the seams and pin in place.
- Stitch the rows together.
- Cut four 13”x1” red strips for borders. First attach top and bottom strips, trim excess fabric and attach strips to the sides. Use 1/4” seam allowance. Open and press.
- Place backing fabric, batting and the quilt top on top of each other. Trim all the layers so you have clean edges.
- Trim 3/4” out of the backing on two sides.
- Place backing fabric and the quilt top right sides together and pin in place. Sew a 1/4” seam along the edges leaving about 7” opening on the top.
- Clip the corners.
- Place the batting on the wrong side of the quilt top. It should lay inside the seams. Baste in several places catching only batting and one layer of fabric.
- Turn the quilt right side out through the opening.
- Fold 1/4”, fingerpress and pin.
- Hand-sew the opening closed. I used a ladder stitch that creates very tidy invisible seam.
- Quilt as desired.
Here we go! The beautiful Snowman mini quilt is finished!
