Material Culture by Russian Quilters’ Guild
Take a look at the first project of Russian Quilters’ Guild presented on the 25th European Patchwork Meeting.
The exhibition is called Material Culture and dedicated to antiquities of Slavic, Egyptian, Scythian, Greek and Byzantine cultures.
I love this wonderful mosaic quilt.
One section of the project is called Excavation and inspired by ancient Slavic jewelry. This works are made by students of Russian artist and designer Irina Voronina.
To create this collection, they had to study Russian traditions and history very carefully. Each art quilt tells a story of a specific piece of jewelry of the ancient Slavs that was made in the XI-XIII centuries and found during excavation in Russia.
Participants of the project created their art quilts using techniques and fabrics that rarely used in traditional patchwork. They worked with natural fabrics such as canvas, linen and cotton. They often used muted natural shades for their quilts.
To embellish their works, quilters used cords and braids, pieces of lace, beads and embroidery. They used variety of decorative stitches, satin stitch and cross-stitch.
The authors also tried to reflect the symbolism and decorative elements used by ancient masters. The artists also explored the topic of traditional Russian costume for their quilts.
