Modern Traditions by Ellen Remijnse

I was tremendously pleased to meet a young textile artist and quilt designer Ellen Remijnse at the European Patchwork Meeting 2019. Ellen’s exhibition is titled Modern Traditions. That beautifully reflects philosophy of her approach to quilting.

She creates quilt patterns and fabric collections that elegantly combine quilting traditions of the past with fresh and modern color palette inspired by the European history and culture.

Ellen adores traditional quilts and fabric patterns but she doesn’t necessary like deep dark colors associated with antique scrap quilts. Her own fabrics feature bright color palette and pretty and delicate patterns.

Despite her young age, Ellen has 20 years of experience in sewing and quilting, starting from her very childhood. When she was only ten, her mother introduced her to a world of patchwork and then it all started and has never stopped.

At her twenties, Ellen founded her own company called Ellie’s Quiltplace or EQP that offers variety of unique patchwork, appliqué and stitchery patterns and kits as well as fabrics designed by Ellen herself.

For each collection, Ellen choses 15 fabrics with small, medium and large prints. Here it is, the box with treasures!

Ellen told me that she doesn’t like sewing machines. That took my speech away as I myself don’t have much patience for hand sewing. Instead, she prefers to sew and quilt by hand so all of her quilts are completely handmade.

This September, Ellen published her first book called Patchwork au fil des saisons. It looks just like candy, full of wonderful pictures and delicious projects. Congratulations!
